OFF SHORE GAMEFISH

OFF SHORE GAMEFISH

Mahi Mahi is second only to billfish in the excitement of visual fly fishing treats. They jump, run, dive, flip, and many other acrobatic defensive measures to break your tippet. They tease in usually very close to the boat and give you a slight advantage in that there are most commonly more than 1 fish per group of fish creating a competitive feeding frenzy on your fly. This is a big advantage for a positive take in any type of fly-fishing. Have a second angler and rod ready while the first hooked fish approaches as the (Followers) might be coming in behind the lead fish looking for more food. Cast the fly 5 ft in front of the hooked fish letting the fly sink until just about the tail passes over the fly, then start to strip fast, Whammo!! Double hook-up!!! yeeeeehaaaaaa 9-12weight-smaller popper or streamer.

Wahoo are as tough as blue marlin to get on the fly since they do not stick around long next to a boat. You have about 2 seconds to make the cast on the tease or game over. If you are lucky enough to hook one keep your drag light for that first 200yd run into your backing. You say at the hook up"Wahooooooo", then when he cuts your shock tippet you say "Onoooo". The Hawaiian word for wahoo, is ono, ya bad joke but its true this will happen nearly everytime you hook a wahoo (ono).
