PEACOCK BASS / TUCS

Peacock Bass or Tucanare are the main predatory species in the lake systems we fish in Hawaii. There are many other species of fresh water fish inhabiting this area such as large mouth bass, catfish, red devils, giant Oscars, and many others that have no names I call nuclear fallout fish. All are great fun if you match the size of the fish with the tackle size.

I love to fish the Tucs with a #4 fly rod and a sinking tippet, or a floating line and a popper depending on the time of day and the aggressiveness of the bite. Clousers minnows, poppers, wiggly leg flies and almost anything in between can draw a bite from one of the many predators lurking in the lake.

There are 3 different feeding scenarios to the peacock bass that you must adjust too throughout the day depending on the time of the year and sunshine at that moment. There are structure fish around logs and grass overhangs that tend to be larger fish. A popper is the most fun for visual bites on the surface if you can entice them to strike.

The most consistent is the point fish that stack up on certain areas and wait for the baitfish to school up around a point of land extending out into the lake. Clouser minnow flies, and weighted wiggly leg patterns work best for these fish.

There are the school tucs that will attack in the middle of the lake to the shoreline ravaging schools of baitfish. You must be quick to get your bait on top of these guys, as they will disappear as quickly as the came. I like small clousers or crazy charlie's for these fast moving fish for a quick and stealthy presentation.

Tucs and large mouth bass differ in that the tucs will school up and act more like a predatory saltwater fish. They will become for active with the more noise you make and the more action you cause when fighting a fish. They are very competitive and will follow the hooked fish into the beach for a look for leftovers, so have bait or a buddies fly ready for that second fish. Large mouth tend to be loners around logs or in spawning beds and require and gentle presentation of the fly or lure.
